Director Laxman Utekar appears to have kept up his entertaining streak with his latest film, Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, following the success of Mimi and Luka Chuppi. The film, which features Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan, is about a couple who wish to buy a house far away from their families. They decide to split apart so that they can take advantage of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), the Indian government’s flagship housing initiative. Today, June 2nd, the film debuts in theaters everywhere.

Almost every scenario in ZHZB will make you and your family roar with amusement. The film depicts everyday life’s mundane details extraordinarily. There are some dull sections at the end, though.

Zara Hatke’s plot unfolds in the Indian city of Indore. In Zara Bachke, Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan play college students Kapil and Saumya, who fall deeply in love with each other. Now that they’re married, they have to deal with Kapil’s family, which means that they hardly get any alone time together and are often interrupted by Kapil’s relatives. The boy sleeps sandwiched between his parents. They live in a little house with no privacy and the mami, who acts like a traditional family villain by constantly nagging Saumya. Kapil and Saumya apply for a flat through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), the Indian government’s flagship housing initiative, so that they can escape their family. However, they will need to acquire a divorce before they can qualify for it. The events that unfold are hilariously comical.

It sounds like putting old wine into a new bottle. Nonetheless, Zara Hatke The work of Zara Bachke is sincere and expertly carried out. As Kapil and Saumya come to terms with what they’ve lost in their attempts to forge their own paths in life, the story examines the importance of family and the bonds within it. (Slight spoilers ahead.) The second half of the film drags, but the uplifting finale will make you rethink the entire plot.

ZHZB gracefully and elegantly highlights the challenges of a middle-class family. To save money, Kapil haggles with shopkeepers and purchases just one Thumbs Up for himself and Saumya to split. His tip is only 1 rupees, but he loads them up with free sodas. He explains that he has been saving up to treat his wife, and that’s why he buys vegetables for Rs 17 instead of Rs 20, and that he bargains a lot. He’s willing to obtain a divorce and treat her to dinner at a five-star restaurant just to see her smile. Relationships and their dynamics are communicated in multiple ways throughout this short story. ZHZB is a narrative about the everyday middle class that is all too familiar.

This is Zara Hatke Zara Bachke is replete with hilarious situations that will have you in stitches. Every second, something new and unexpected happens. Kanupriya Pandit, who plays Kapil’s grandmother, pokes fun at her Punjabi son-in-law for serving them cake containing eggs. Kapil is a carefree guy who hides a false tooth so he can surprise his future wife. Saumya pretends to have conflicts with him so she may tell her family that they’re separated. A government official visits to Saumya’s house after the divorce to make sure she is living apart from her husband, and the two almost get caught together. Kapil, who happens to be with her at the moment, finds himself in the amusing position of pretending to be a plumber. A love triangle is also depicted, which just adds to the insanity.

While the movie’s first act is hilarious, the second half falls flat. At times, we find the entertainment value to be draining, and as a result, we find ourselves bored. The plot also seems to linger in the second half. When Kapil and Saumya are forced to act like a brother and sister, or when Deepa mami contracts a fatal condition, it raises the stakes unnecessarily. The writers clearly ran out of ideas at this point, since it felt pushed into the narrative. The conclusion falls short of our expectations.

In addition to directing, Laxman Utekar has also worked as a cinematographer on several successful films. Zara Hatke Zara Bachke is obviously a good reflection of his work. His depiction of the small-town atmosphere is spot-on. Laxman has combined a love marriage between people of different castes with the traditional model of a joint family living together. The cinematography by Raghav Ramadoss also deserves a round of applause.

The film’s selling point is the chemistry between Vicky Kaushal and Sara Ali Khan. Vicky is the ideal middle-class guy, with just the right amount of expression in every scenario. Sara Ali Khan is the epitome of a strong and independent middle-class bahu. The two have something in common with every newlywed couple. Even more impressive is the chemistry between Vicky and Sara.

Neeraj Sood and Kanupirya Pandit, who play Saumya’s parents, as well as Inaamulhaq, Rakesh Bedi (as Saumya’s father), Harcharan Chawla, and Akash Khurana, have all been fantastic in their supporting roles.

This is Zara Hatke Zara Bachke’s hilarious one-liners and impeccable timing make it an absolute must-see. It’s great for the whole family and could help relieve some of the stress of modern living. A lot more could have been accomplished, though.
