Varisu Movie 2023 Review
Setting a family drama against the backdrop of a cutthroat corporate world, director Vamshi manages to weave a fairly engaging film on misunderstood sons and fathers, warring brothers, jealous rivals, worried mother, light-hearted romance, a peppy songs and heavy-duty heroic moments. This is all powered by a sparkling star turn by Vijay that elevates ordinary moments into entertaining episodes.
The story revolves around Rajendran (Sarath Kumar, who seems to have been directed to always look glum just because his character has terminal illness), a business tycoon who pits his own sons against each other to ensure that he has the right successor. While the first and second sons, Jai (Srikanth) and Ajay (Shaam), have an eye on the chairman's chair and blindly act out their father's whims and fancies, the third son, Vijay (Vijay) has a difference of opinion with his methods and choses to stay away. And just when Rajendran learns that he is counting his days, he gets to see his sons for who they really are, and ends up making Vijay as his successor, which results in the other two going on a warpath and worse, joining with his bitter rival Jayaprakash (Prakash Raj). Can Vijay prove himself to be a worthy varisu and also reunite his now-broken family?
Varisu does begin in a rather shaky manner, with scenes that seem somewhat alien to its milieu and rather cold. Even the mother sentiment doesn't really seem forceful enough, and the scenes between Vijay and Jayasudha have the sanitised feel of a TV commercial. What keeps us interested in these moments are the parallels that we read into them based on the reported real-life tiff between the film's star and his parents.
That said, the set-up makes us feel like we have dropped into a Telugu version of Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, where, instead of the gangster backdrop, we get a story set against the corporate backdrop. There are moments that are rather flat, like the fallout scene between Vijay and Rajendran, that appears early in the film. Even the intermission point isn't exactly a rousing one.
But then, the film switches gear in the second half, and Vamshi scores in sixes and fours with the mass moments that have both comedy and heroism in equal measure. He also punctures the sentimental moments with comedy and ensures that things don't get too melodramatic. At the same time, he also doesn't hold back when he wants to reach for his audience's tear ducts. This is a film that is quite self-aware. Family and relationships are what drive the plot, and the film film is woke enough to acknowledge that relatives can be toxic, and old-fashioned enough to understand that sometimes, we got to make the best of what we have when it comes to family.
There are slip-ups in the form of a rather slight romantic track (Rashmika plays the arm candy here), and less-than-formidable villains. That even an actor of Prakash Raj's stature cannot turn the antagonist into a formidable threat to the protagonist shows how weak the characterisation is. Perhaps, the director felt the conflict involving Vijay bringing his two brothers back into the fold was enough. The overall writing in the scenes is also quite broad, which lessens the emotional impact of the scenes, especially in the first half. The pacing, too, is uneven and Vamshi even includes unnecessary songs and one too many fights that turn the film into an overlong affair.
But he makes up for all of it through his leading star. Vijay is in terrific form, cracking one-liners that have us break out into a smile, exchanging comic counters with Yogi Babu (who is quite funny, after a long time), making self-referential punches (a scene involving a boardroom meeting is a riot!) and showing earnestness to make us buy the sentimental moments.

Varisu Movie 2023 Story
Varisu, like an urban popular family sitcom, tells the story of a happy-go-lucky guy named Vijay Rajendran, played by Thalapthy Vijay. After his foster father mysteriously passed away, his character's circumstances altered, and he now found himself in charge of a multi-billion-dollar corporate reign. Between this voyage and the one that followed, he was confronted with a slew of sins and tragedies. In order to get the crowd cheering, Yogi Babu and Anand Raj will develop the movie in a humorous way.
It's really no bit surprising that popularised Southern directors and elevated performers are suffocating the family saga genre. Despite numerous repetitions of a single tele pattern over the years, Varisu is a distinct and unique theme with a high level of excellence. Vamshi Paidipally, in his first partnership with Thalapathy Vijay, performs it incredibly comfortably. It's a typical household drama with all the expected pulses, but it's saved primarily by the involvement of one hero, "Thalapathy," who handles all of the grunt work and ends up making this one a thoroughly enjoyable stream.
Varisu is linear from the beginning, but the sheer influence of Vijay acts in its possession. After primarily working in action movies in latest years, it was heartening to see Vijay possess fun in a straight-up community cinema. This is a movie that makes extensive use of Vijay's comedic edge, and it tends to operate like charm. It's a natural quality that will resonate even with quasi fans. Ever other moment standardisation sets in, Vijay has seemed to divert attention and impress with his field portrayal who transforms into the family's redeemer.
Besides Vijay, Taman's muisc and Prakash Raj's contrary Vijay brought back Muthupandi and Velu. Regrettably, it's a show worth seeing with your family during the Pongal fest. It's a clear pongal delight from the thalapathy to his fan base.
Varisu Movie 2023 Film's Announcement
Being that this is Vijay's 66th movie in a prominent position, the movie's working title is Thalapathy 66, and it was first confirmed in September 2021. April 2022 saw the start of principal photography, which ended in December. With rare schedules in Visakhapatnam, Bellary, and Ladakh, the movie was filmed primarily in Chennai and Hyderabad.
Vamsi claimed that the project's creators had planned to reveal it early that year but were forced to change their plans due to COVID's second wave in India. According to sources, Vijay was paid $1.18 billion for the movie. Additionally, it was said that he would be wearing two different looks because the movie will take place in two different eras. On the eve of Vijay's 48th b'day, on June 21, 2022, the title Varisu was published.
The movie's plot was created with Mahesh Babu in mind, and when the actor was unable to join, the producers contacted Allu Arjun, Prabhas, and Ram Charan before settling on Vijay. On November 5, 2022, T-Series released their first single, "Ranjithame."
Varisu Movie 2023 Review : Script Analysis
Letting the story stand tall on the heroic presence of Vijay, script-writers somehow tend to forget to make things intriguing & take shortcuts like relying solely on the lead actor charming his way in. After a point of time, even Salman Khan failed to achieve the same in Bollywood and it seems Vijay has taken the same route. Vamshi Paidipally, Hari, Ashishor Solomon’s story is a poorly rehashed and mashed-up version of every 90s family drama ever.
To enrapture the viewers with this castle of a house, Karthik Palani’s camerawork overcompensates at places with too many angles jerking the scenes. The cinematography is decent otherwise, especially capturing the hand combat sequences’ brilliant action choreography by Dhilip Subbarayan. Praveen K. L’s editing does no help in keeping the pace at a desired speed for such a dragging & predictable story.
Varisu Movie 2023 Review: Star Performance
Vijay does what he does best but yet again in a film whose story isn’t qualified enough to handle his ‘mass’. The problem isn’t him being the best thing about the film, but the actual problem is he’s the only good thing about the film. His dance, his actions, and his antiques are all perfectly fine but they don’t find the right ‘home’ in this family drama.
Rashmika Mandanna continues to sign the flower pot actress roles & this ain’t much different. Staying in the story without creating any impact on it apart from looking good and dancing well, is something actresses should really refrain from doing. It’s 2023! To be fair to all, every other actor in the cast apart from Vijay is a flower pot actor in this film.
R. Sarathkumar as Vijay’s father doesn’t get much to do to build the emotions in the father-son bond, and the same goes for Jayasudha playing his mother. Vijay, in a scene, mimics Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic index finger waving pose from K3G but that worked purely because of Karan Johar’s rightly dramatic direction.
Prakash Raj as a villain is of no use, not a single scene of him will make you feel terrified for Vijay. Shaam & Srikanth as Vijay’s brothers are just to form a toxic family, both don’t really invoke any ‘bhaichara’ emotions to intrigue the viewers. Yogi Babu continues to be the routine cliched comic relief he has been in such Tamil films.
Varisu Movie 2023 Review: Direction, Music
Vamshi Paidipally had everything at his disposal, a bankable star, a decent cast, money-making genre but the only thing he missed churning out was a justifiable story. I had a similar issue with Salman Khan’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo as well but that one still had a good music album.
Thaman S has composed the album for this one with only Jimikki Ponnu being the bearable track because of Vijay’s performance & the music. Even the songs get monotonous coming across like they were the only options to the makers for keeping the viewers somewhat interested in the film.
Varisu Movie 2023 Review: The Last Word
All said and done, the major issue about Vijay’s family drama is it misses two important things: interesting family and impactful drama. Beast, despite all its flaws, was a superior project to this one.
